Welcome to Volume 1 of my collection of short stories, ‘Scattered Visions’. I chose this title to explain how my mind works when I’m sitting down to write.
My Muse is erratic, frenetic,
unpredictable, and fleeting. She scatters ideas around in little nuggets,
leaving them here and there for me to find and play with. Usually just as I’m
drifting off to sleep.
After reexamining most of these little
diamonds in the rough, I usually toss them over my mental shoulder into the
trash. Those that, in the light of the next day, seem actually interesting I
put in a folder. Then I write up a quick outline or plot summary and let them cook
on the back burner for a while.
These five tales have simmered in my
brain long enough, it’s time to serve them up on a virtual platter.
Bon appetite!
COMPANION
This tale explores some near future
possibilities in the field of Artificial Intelligence, AI, and medical
enhancements. How will we use these amazing concepts to benefit Mankind? We’ve
only scratched the surface of the myriad opportunities so far.
I suggest a first step…
FINAL ANALYSIS
This is a fun, and I hope thought
provoking, vision of one of the oldest questions known to Mankind, the search
for other life and most importantly how we might find them.
Is this how we search…
THE WORKSHOP
Grandpa’s shack, in this tale of
‘contact’, is based on a real place from my childhood. My grandfather was a
renaissance man who built and fixed radios, built his own prairie sod home, and
rode a mule in North Texas as a circuit riding Baptist preacher.
Ever wonder why we haven’t been
contacted…
TOURISTS
Remembering the Texas State Fair
Merry-Go-Round brought this story to life in a single sitting.
Just for fun…
TRANSLATION
The Universe is a dangerous place. We’re
only now beginning to realize that we don’t even know what we don’t know. Will
Mankind exist long enough to learn how to live among the stars?
